「台灣關係法」(Taiwan Relations Act) 是經美國參眾兩院制定通過，1979年1月1日生效的美國國內法。以國內法來規範與台灣的關係，在國際上是非常特別的舉動。根據「台灣關係法」，美國設立「在台協會」(American Institute in Taiwan)，「在台協會」雖無官方之名，卻有提供護照簽證核發等、以及傳達美國政府的訊息給台灣的官方之實，就是根據此法，1980年以後美國繼續銷售武器給台灣，台灣的安全得到相當程度的保障。
「台灣關係法」的宗旨是：
本法乃為協助維持西太平洋之和平、安全與穩定，並授權繼續維持美國人民與在台灣人民間之商業、文化及其他關係，以促進美國外交政策，並為其他目的。
To help maintain peace, security, and stability in the Western Pacific and to promote the foreign policy of the United States by authorizing the continuation of commercial, cultural, and other relations between the people of the United States and the people on Taiwan, and for other purposes.
其他目的包括：
表明，美國與中華人民共和國建立外交關係的決定基於預期：台灣的未來將以和平方式解決the future of Taiwan will be determined by peaceful means。
任何其他試圖以非和平方式決定台灣的未來，包括抵制或禁運，將被認為威脅西太平洋的和平與安全，且為美國所嚴重關切。
提供台灣防衛性武器，也維持美國的能力以抵抗、將危害台灣人民的安全、社會和經濟体系的、任何訴諸武力或其他脅迫的方式。
「台灣關係法」針對台灣住民的人權條款：法案的任何條款不得違背美國對人權的關注，特別對台灣所有住民的人權。在此重申，維護和促進所有台灣人民的人權，是美國的目標。
"Nothing contained in this Act shall contravene the interest of the United States in human rights, especially with respect to the human rights of all the …inhabitants of Taiwan. The preservation and enhancement of the human rights of all the people on Taiwan are hereby reaffirmed as objectives of the United States."
